Provocation

Pressing challenges a claim a guest has already made. Provocation is the other art: supplying a claim for the table to push against, when no one has made one worth pushing.

What provocation is for

A flat table: dutiful answers, premature consensus, six people agreeing their way to silence. Agreement is comfortable and produces nothing; a table needs resistance the way a fire needs something to burn. When nobody at the table supplies the resistance, the host manufactures it — visibly, deliberately, and on loan.

The tell that it worked: energy rises and positions form — people discover they believe things. The tell that it failed: someone defends themselves rather than an idea. That is the cue for Cooling or Owning the Foul, immediately.

Three safe shapes

ShapeMoveSounds likeThe rule
The owned overstatementPlanting the Flag“Let me plant a flag I half-believe: nobody actually likes live music.”Own the artifice out loud. A flag passed off as conviction is manipulation.
The forced rankingForcing the Choice“One has to go — which?”Aim at things, never people. Ranking dinner guests is a party trick with casualties.
Declared devil’s advocacyDisagreeing“I’ll take the other side for a minute.”Announce the role, play it briefly, drop it visibly. You’re a wall, not an opponent.

Dosage

One flag per evening, at most. Provocation is a spice: the first pinch wakes the table, the second one flavors it, the third is all anyone can taste. Deploy it only after warmth is established — a provocation before the table trusts you reads as an ambush — and retire it the moment real material appears. The provocation was never the point; the energy it releases is.

Where provocation is banned

Provocation is a loan against the table’s trust. Repay it: concede the overstatement out loud once it has done its work.

Try it now

Three rounds of Move Roulette, dealt only from the provocation moves. Out loud.
