Engage the guarded guest

Make a script insufficient without fighting it. Use hospitable clarification with executives, celebrities, litigants, publicists, technical experts, and other rehearsed guests.

Worked example

A scripted answer, narrowed without adversariality.

Guest“Look, at the end of the day we’re focused on delivering value for the whole community.”

The publicist answer — let the script finish once.

Host“That’s the public argument. What did the decision cost you?”

Acknowledge in six words, then ask for cost.

Guest“Change is always hard for some stakeholders.”

Deflection — a nearby, easier question got answered.

Host“It’s still my question — the cost to you.”

Holding the Question, shorter, no accusation.

Guest(pause) “I stopped being invited to the Wednesday dinners.”

Host“Tell me about the last one you did attend.”

Specific case — the principle now has a scene.
